A Guru’s Pick in the „Ultimate Exposure” Challenge — When It All Comes Down to Light

In short: My fine-art black & white photograph received a Guru’s Pick in the „Ultimate Exposure” challenge on GuruShots. The photo was chosen by the challenge guru (the GuruShots Team), and was rewarded with +50 votes.

„Ultimate Exposure” is a challenge about light — about that single moment when exposure, shadow and glow line up perfectly. Which makes it all the more rewarding that, in exactly this theme, my work received a Guru’s Pick — a personal distinction from the judge, not just an automated score.

What a Guru’s Pick is

On GuruShots, every challenge is hosted by a guru acting as judge. Beyond the community vote, the guru can award a Guru’s Pick: a personal distinction for the image that spoke to them most. This time the decision came from the team hosting the challenge, and the photo was rewarded with an extra 50 votes in the ranking. To me, this is the most valuable kind of feedback — recognition for deliberate work on the image.

The photo and the „Ultimate Exposure” theme

The selected frame is a black & white outdoor photograph: a figure in a flowing white gown right at the water’s edge, at the moment a wave spreads into foam at her feet. Strong, directional light sculpts the fabric and the surface of the sea, while deep blacks and bright, blown-out highlights build a cinematic, almost ethereal mood.

The image rests entirely on exposure and light — exactly what the challenge was about. I wanted the movement of the gown, the reflection on the wet sand and the rhythm of the wave to come together in one fleeting moment.

Why it matters to me

Working with light is, for me, the heart of fine-art photography — chasing fleeting conditions, building mood, and blending figure with landscape in a way that tells a story rather than documents a scene. Recognition from a judge reassures me that it is worth waiting for the right light and consistently building a recognisable style. Every piece of feedback like this is fuel for the next project.

How GuruShots works

GuruShots is often called the world’s greatest photography game. Photographers worldwide submit work to themed challenges, collect community votes, climb the rankings (from Newbie up to Guru status), and the best images are sometimes shown at gallery exhibitions around the world.

The path to recognition is open to everyone:

  1. Submit a photo to a themed challenge.
  2. Collect votes from the community and rise through the ranking.
  3. A guru may award a Guru’s Pick — a personal distinction for a chosen image.
