My black-and-white fine-art portrait was selected for digital display at the Portrait Photographer of the Year exhibition at The Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham Street, in London's Fitzrovia. The exhibition was presented by the international photography platform GuruShots, with an opening night on Friday, 22 December 2023, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. It marks an international recognition for my portrait photography in the heart of artistic London.
I'm delighted to share that one of my portraits was selected for digital display at the Portrait Photographer of the Year exhibition at The Coningsby Gallery in London. The selection was made from photographs submitted by image-makers around the world through a GuruShots challenge - and the theme, portraiture, is one of the pillars of my work.
The chosen work is a black-and-white fine-art portrait - an intimate, high-contrast frame with dramatic natural light falling across half of the face. A straw hat, the texture of skin, freckles and tattoos build character and closeness, while black and white distils the image to what matters most: the gaze and the mood. For me it's the essence of portraiture - photography as an encounter with another person.
Digital display means the photograph was shown on screens within the gallery for the run of the exhibition - alongside the work of other selected photographers from across the globe.
The Coningsby Gallery is an intimate, well-regarded contemporary art space established in 1994 at 30 Tottenham Street, London W1, in the thriving district of Fitzrovia - at the very heart of London's artistic West End. The gallery is renowned for its dedication to outstanding contemporary fine art, illustration and graphic art, working with both emerging and internationally established artists.
The December 2023 GuruShots edition brought two exhibitions together in this space - Portrait Photographer of the Year and Photographer of the Year 2023. It is a venue that has regularly hosted GuruShots shows over the years, and Fitzrovia, famous for its literary connections, museums and galleries, is a particularly inspiring backdrop for this recognition.
GuruShots is an international photography platform that brings together the worlds of art and technology. Photographers around the globe submit their work to thematic photo challenges that open every day. The best images are then selected for display at GuruShots Exhibitions, held in major cities worldwide - from New York, Stockholm and Mexico City to Melbourne, Hanoi and London.
